1965 Triumph TR4A IRS For Sale

Sale Price: $59,995

The Michelotti designed Triumph TR4 is part of an iconic line of Triumphs which are much loved throughout the world. In many respects the ‘TR’ series epitomises the classic open British sports car and its design and performance are enduring.

As a TR4 ‘IRS’ our car benefits from the use of the independent rear suspension introduced to improve the handling and ride.

The Heritage Trust Certificate that accompanies the car confirms it was delivered new to Australia in 1965 and shipped aboard the ‘Tasmania Star’ for the Sydney dealer. The certificate also confirms this is a matching numbers car with original engine and body number. Delivery options confirm sixty spoke wire wheels, windscreen washer, overdrive the Surrey hard top, soft top kit and tool kit.

We have extensive records of the car dating back to 1978 and we believe there have been 6 owners since then including the current one who bought the car in 2021. At that point the car had been partially restored by the previous owner with extensive mechanical work completed including an engine and gearbox rebuild undertaken by Triumph expert Greg Tunstall. The body had been painted in its original white and the new owner made the decision to go back to bare metal and repaint it in its current metallic British Racing Green and although not its original colour we think it looks stunning and suits the car well.

The interior has been beautifully retrimmed in tan leather with dark green piping. Everything that needed replacing or refurbishing has been done. The walnut veneer dash is like new and complimented beautifully by the instruments which have been expertly refurbished. Sitting behind the wheel of this car really is a special place to be. Even the Motolita steering wheel is new.

The list of new items is extensive including new stainless steel bumpers, exhaust system, badges, taillights, grill, headlights, powder coating the wheels, new soft top kit…. the list goes on, to the point where any component that required electroplating was replated.

The current owner has had some upgrades installed to make the car a more usable including electronic ignition, electric fuel pump and the cooling system has been upgraded with an electric fan installed. The engine bay we would argue presents better than it would have done when it rolled off the production line.

The overall presentation of this TR4A is wonderful and incredibly eye catching. The paint colour is stunning, however on very close inspection there is evidence of some minor moisture blistering but this is hard to pick and does not detract from the overall presence of the car.

The result is a freshly restored Australian delivered TR4 IRS with only a few kilometres driven since its completion with its rare alloy ‘Surrey’ hard top. Unfortunately, due to an impending move the owner now needs to sell the car and this presents a good opportunity for the next owner to purchase at a fraction of its build cost.

A folder with invoices and records dating back to 1978 comes with the car and its ready for its next custodian to get out and enjoy what is arguably a definitive classic British sports car.
