1967 Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint
Sale Price: SOLD
Delivered new to Alec Mildren Brisbane in 1967, this Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint presents in its original Bianco Antico with sumptuous brown leather interior. It is one of the most original cars we’ve ever seen.
It is a 2 owner car and shows only 78,970 miles, which based on the records looks original. (In 1988 it only showed 71,090 miles). It was first sold new to a Mr RA Lynch in QLD who traded in a Jaguar for it and he then owned it for some 47 years until it was passed onto the current owner 7 years ago.
The 2600 Sprint really defined the executive driver’s car for Alfa Romeo. Built between 1964 and 1967 only 6,999 were made and of those a mere 597 were RHD.
This larger grand touring coupé could seat four adults in comfort over long journeys at high speeds thanks to the wide power and torque band of the 2584cc six-cylinder engine. With a 5 speed gearbox and all round disc brakes it was perfect to drive long distances at speed and in comfort.
The design is the result of Giorgetto Giugiaro’s first major project as head designer for Carrozzeria Bertone, and is arguably one of the most influential designs in the history of automotive styling.
Of the 597 RHD cars, very few were sold new in Australia and this is one of those. Its VIN starting in 854 confirms this was a produced for the Australian market and is underlined in the original sales documents which accompany the car.
It is rare to see so many of these still present, which includes, sales receipts, service log book, original sales brochures, various instruction booklets and workshop manuals (Volume 1 and 2!). The original key and key fob is also present. This is an extraordinary collection of original documentation for a car and very rarely seen.
The body of the car is in excellent condition and the colour of the paint suits the car setting off the brightwork well. At distance the paint presents well however on closer inspection it shows surface imperfections and the odd mark here and there which you would expect for a car of some 50 years in age. It has been this way for many years and can of course be left as is or can be attended to by the new owner. There is no evidence of rust anywhere on the car and the body is without any significant bumps or damage. Clearly it has lead a pampered life.
The engine and gearbox both perform faultlessly with no issues with the synchro’s. Over the last few years the car has been driven on fair weather days and to ensure it drives well the following work was completed. New clutch master and slave cylinder, full brake overhaul including callipers, brake master cylinder, machined rotors and hoses. A new head gasket and radiator, shock absorbers and axle straps have also been fitted amongst other items. The interior is in remarkably wonderful original condition with the leather showing no signs of cracking or loss of colour, even the dash is sound without cracking. The current owner replaced the calico fabric that sits under the leather and the seats are remarkably comfortable to sit in. The electric windows are in working correctly and the headlining is in superb order and the window chrome is spot on. The interior of this car really is a lovely place to be.
The original air-conditioning is currently disconnected but all parts come with the car and it would be worth the next owner upgrading this.
The wheels have just been refurbished at some considerable cost with correct profile tyres too. The boot still has its original mat and the wheel well is in perfect order with a refurbished spare wheel.
Out on the road this car really is a gentlemen’s express and is incredibly quiet and comfortable to drive as it works through the gears with the 2.6 litre engine providing plenty of ‘go’ whilst delivering an intoxicating engine note.
Compared to its contemporaries from Maserati and Ferrari this represents something of a bargain and particularly one that is so original. A wonderful driving Alfa Romeo with a fantastic history.
