1991 Alfa Romeo 75 2.0 ‘Twin Spark’

Sale Price: SOLD - Another wanted

The Alfa Romeo 75 was named to celebrate Alfa’s 75th anniversary and was produced between 1985 and 1992. It was a commercial success and proved a popular car with 170,000 cars produced in the first 3 years alone.

The 75 was the last model developed before being acquired by Fiat and was the last rear wheel drive Alfa Romeo produced for many years.

The body, designed by head of Alfa Romeo Centro Stile Ermanno Cressoni, was a striking wedge shape, tapering at the front with square headlights and a matching grille. It has stood the test of time and remains a wonderful exercise in brave design.

It’s not all looks though. The 75 possessed superb driving characteristics influenced by it being perfectly balanced from front to rear. This was achieved by using a Transaxle configuration – mounting the standard five-speed gearbox in the rear connected to the rear differential (rear-wheel drive). The front suspension was a torsion bar and shock absorber combination and the rear an expensive De Dion tube assembled with shock absorbers; these designs were all intended to optimize the car’s handling; moreover, the rear brake discs were fitted at the centre of the rear axle, near the gearbox-differential.

In 1987, a 3.0 litre V6 was added to the range and the 2.0 L Alfa Romeo Twin Cam engine was redesigned to have two spark plugs per cylinder, the engine was named as Twin Spark. With fuel injection and variable valve timing this engine produced 148 PS (109 kW; 146 hp). This engine arguably founded modern engines of today as it was the first production engine to use variable valve timing. Both the 3.0 litre and Twin Spark also had Limited Slip Differential fitted as standard.

The result was a very capable driving car and little wonder it achieved significant racing success in many events across numerous countries. Today they are still seen on race circuits often punching way above their weight. In short, the Alfa Romeo 75 lives up to the reputation as a true ‘drivers car’.

Our car is a later model 2.0 Twin Spark delivered in 1991 in classic ‘Alfa Rosso’.

The current owner acquired the car around 2 years ago to add to his extensive collection of Alfa Romeo’s however he now wishes to thin this down and lets some cars go, this being one.

During his ownership he has had the car repainted and addressed some mechanical and electrical issues including fitting a new exhaust manifold, work to the brakes and refurbishing the air conditioning unit to ensure it works perfectly. The interior is original and does show some signs of sun fade to the seats but other than that they have few signs of wear and are not holed anywhere. Whilst not perfect it drives very well without issue and would make a more affordable way to enjoy classic Alfa Romeo ownership.
